The independent bluesign® system pursues the unique approach to minimize the environmental impact throughout the production process. The so-called Input Stream Management ensures that all during the production process applied substances and raw materials are already verified in advance of the production. In other words: Instead of testing finished products bluesign® system is applied at the point where the production starts. This means, that suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and brands have to go through rigorous tests in order to verify compliance with bluesign® criteria.
The bluesign® system focus guarantees the application of sustainable ingredients in a clean process at which end stands a safely manufactured product. As a result, the textile industry manages the natural resources soundly and responsibly, reduces water and air emissions, improves its wastewater treatment and generally reduces its ecological footprint.
With this holistic approach, the bluesign® system unites all partners of the textile industry in order to realize an environmentally friendly, sustainable textile production worldwide.
The bluesign® system is based on five principles:
The bluesign® system defines concrete criteria for each production level based on extensive risk assessments. According to the five principles, these criteria ensure maximum sustainability along the entire textile supply chain:
Fair Wear Foundation works to create a garment industry that is fair for everyone.
Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) is a non-profit organization that works with garment brands, factories, trade unions, NGOs and governments to improve working conditions for garment workers in 11 production countries across Asia, Europe and Africa. 130 Fair Wear Foundation member brands are showing that there is a fairer way to make clothes. They are using their influence to create change.
FWF members are dedicated to implementing the eight FWF labor standards but know that that doesn’t happen overnight. The garment industry is complex, global, fragmented and rarely transparent. That means FWF brands cannot fix things on their own. All other brands need to step up too. And so do local governments, factories and trade unions. There aren’t yet any 100% fair supply chains in this industry. So the Fair Wear Foundation is not perfect, but it is an excellent alternative.
FWF members are open about the steps they are taking toward better labour conditions. And about things that still need to be done. They let an independent NGO (that’s us) check what did and did not go well each year and publically report on this. FWF brands are also transparent about complaints received in the factories they work with. It takes courage to put their brand’s activities out under the public eye, but transparency is the only way forward if we want the garment industry to improve.

VAUDE is a pioneer in the sustainability field and has developed its own rating system for environmentally friendly outdoor products: Green Shape.
Green Shape label offers functional, environmentally friendly products made from sustainable materials. VAUDE is vigilant about fair working conditions throughout the supply chain. VAUDE Green Shape label criteria for evaluation are stringent and transparent. They are under constant review and cover the entire lifecycle of the product from design and production to maintenance, repair, and disposal.
With Green Shape, the entire product lifecycle is scrutinized including the design, all materials used, the production facilities, use and care of the product, and potential recycling and/or environmentally friendly disposal. Green Shape is a two-tier process: Each Green Shape product must be made from certified and/or environmentally friendly materials and the production facility where the materials come from must also be environmentally certified. This doubles the safety net, especially with regard to handling chemicals in production.
Green Shape expressly excludes the use of particularly critical materials and technologies such as PVC, fluorocarbons, chlorine, and bleaches containing hypochlorite, nanotechnology or solvent-containing prints. Each Green Shape product must be easy to maintain and clean, and cannot require dry cleaning.
The bluesign® system is an important part of the concept. But Green Shape goes beyond the bluesign® system. Green Shape products may not, for example, contain fluorocarbons, while the bluesign® system allows their use under strict conditions.
